Tunnels Beach is, in my opinion, the most beautiful beach on Kauai. I have been coming here for over 50 years, and the combination of the reef, the mountains, and the water still takes my breath away every single time. The beach gets its name from the underwater lava tube formations that create tunnels and caverns in the reef, making it one of the best snorkeling and diving sites in all of Hawaii.
Here is everything you need to know to visit Tunnels Beach, from how to get there and where to park to what the snorkeling is actually like and when the conditions are best.
Tunnels Beach (called Makua Beach by locals) is on the North Shore of Kauai, about 2 miles past Hanalei town toward the end of the road. It sits at the base of Makana Mountain, the dramatic peak also known as Bali Hai from the movie South Pacific.
The beach is part of the Ha’ena coastline, near Ke’e Beach and Ha’ena Beach Park. GPS coordinates will take you to the general area, but the access points can be tricky if you do not know where to look.
Ha’ena State Park Reservation: As of recent years, you need a reservation to enter Ha’ena State Park, which includes the road past Hanalei. Reservations can be booked online at the Hawaii DLNR reservation site. You will need one per vehicle, and they sell out, especially during summer months.
Parking: There is no dedicated Tunnels Beach parking lot. Most visitors park along the road near the Haena Beach Park area. From the River Estate in Hanalei, the drive is about 10 minutes.
Beach access: Two main access points exist along the road. Look for the breaks in the ironwood trees where sandy paths lead to the beach. The eastern access (closer to Hanalei) leads to the best snorkeling area near the reef.
Tunnels Beach has one of the largest and most complex reef systems on Kauai. The reef extends several hundred yards offshore and creates a natural lagoon that protects swimmers and snorkelers from open-ocean swells during the calm months.
The snorkeling at Tunnels is world-class. On a typical day in summer, you can expect to see:
Tunnels Beach snorkeling is highly seasonal:

For certified divers, Tunnels Beach offers some of the most accessible shore diving on Kauai. The reef drops off to 30-60 feet in places, with caverns, swim-throughs, and arches formed by the lava tubes that give the beach its name.
Several dive operators on the North Shore run guided shore dives at Tunnels during summer months. The lava tube formations are particularly impressive: you can swim through tunnels in the reef that are large enough to fit several divers side by side.
Tunnels Beach faces due north-northwest, which gives it one of the most spectacular sunset positions on the island during summer months. The sun sets behind the ridgeline of Makana Mountain, painting the sky in oranges, pinks, and purples while the mountain creates a dramatic silhouette. Bring a blanket and arrive an hour before sunset to get the full show.
The calm lagoon inside the reef is ideal for stand-up paddleboarding during summer months. The water is flat, clear, and shallow enough that you can see fish and turtles below your board. Several rental shops in Ha’ena and Hanalei rent boards by the hour or day.
Tunnels Beach is one of the most photographed beaches in Hawaii for good reason. The combination of the crescent beach, turquoise water, ironwood tree framing, and Makana Mountain in the background creates a composition that professional photographers travel from around the world to capture. Golden hour (the hour before sunset) is the magic time.
During calm months, the lagoon area is one of the best swimming spots on Kauai. The reef breaks incoming waves, creating a protected pool of warm, clear water. It is deep enough for swimming but shallow enough that you can stand in many areas. For families with children, this makes it safer than many North Shore beaches.
Tunnels Beach is beautiful but demands respect. Here are the safety rules I follow after 50 years:
Tunnels Beach is relatively undeveloped, which is part of its appeal:
Tunnels Beach is in the heart of Kauai’s most scenic coastline. While you are in the area:
If you are staying at River Estate in Hanalei, Tunnels Beach is about a 10-minute drive west along Kuhio Highway. We provide our guests with detailed directions and tips on the best time to arrive. Guests at the Guest House also enjoy this easy proximity to the North Shore’s best beach.

The inner reef area is suitable for confident beginners in calm summer conditions. The outer reef and deeper areas are for experienced snorkelers only. Winter swells make Tunnels Beach dangerous for swimming and snorkeling. Always check conditions before entering.
Tunnels Beach (Makua Beach) is located near the end of the road on the North Shore, past Hanalei. You need a Ha’ena State Park reservation to park. Arrive early because parking is very limited. The beach is a short walk from the road through ironwood trees.
Summer (May through September) offers the calmest, clearest conditions. Morning is best before afternoon trade winds stir up the water. Winter brings large, dangerous surf that makes snorkeling impossible. Check surf reports before making the drive.
