River Estate offers two private Hanalei vacation rentals — riverfront homes in Wainiha, ten to fifteen minutes past Hanalei town, on two gated acres beside the Wainiha River. Close enough for dinner in Hanalei and the farmers market; far enough that you hear the river instead of the road.
Where we are, honestly
We are not in Hanalei town itself. River Estate sits about six miles further west, in Wainiha — past the one-lane bridges, in the quiet stretch of coast between Hanalei and Hāʻena. That distance is the entire point, and most guests decide it is the better address once they have stayed.
Hanalei is beautiful and it is busy. In season the town parks up, the bay fills, and the search for a space takes longer than the drive. Staying a few minutes west means you visit Hanalei whenever you like, then leave it behind at the end of the day.

The Riverhouse

Hanalei town is one street, and that is its charm: surf shops, a handful of very good restaurants, a grocery, a farmers market, and taro fields running back toward mountains that turn into waterfalls after rain. The bay itself is a two-mile crescent with the pier at one end — calm and swimmable in summer, a serious surf break in winter.
Hanalei, Princeville, Hāʻena or Wainiha — which to book
Hanalei town — walkable to restaurants and the bay. Busiest, most expensive, least parking.
Princeville — resorts, golf and the last full grocery. Convenient and manicured, on the bluff rather than the water, about twenty minutes east of us.
Hāʻena — the very end of the road, next to Keʻe. Beautiful and remote; you drive for everything, and the state park requires reservations.
Wainiha — where River Estate is. Between the two: minutes from Tunnels and Keʻe, a quarter hour from Hanalei, on a river, with no resort anywhere near you.
No — they are in Wainiha, roughly ten to fifteen minutes west of Hanalei town on the same coast. Guests visit Hanalei daily and return to a quiet riverfront property with private parking.
Do I need a car to stay near Hanalei?
Yes. There is no practical public transport on this coast, and rental cars sell out in peak season well before flights do. Book the car when you book the flights.
Which house is better for a family visiting Hanalei Bay?
