Bikes, Kayaks and Paddleboards on Kauai’s North Shore

You do not need to strap anything to a hire car on Kauaʻi. The practical way to get bikes, paddleboards and kayaks on the North Shore is to have them delivered to where you are staying and collected at the end. Here is how that works and what it costs.

Delivery is the normal way

Local outfitters deliver to vacation rentals along this coast. Gear arrives at the house, sits there for the week, and is collected afterwards — no roof racks, no daily shop visits, no wet kayak in a rental car. Most operate on a multi-day minimum, typically around four days, which suits a week-long stay.

What you should not need to rent

Snorkel sets, boogie boards and beach chairs are supplied at many houses, including both of ours. Check before hiring — a week of snorkel rental for a family is real money spent on something already sitting in the cupboard.

Where you can actually paddle

• The Wainiha River — calm, sheltered and short. This is the paddle guests at River Estate do most: across the river from the garden to the sand, a few minutes each way. Best around slack or incoming tide; avoid it entirely when the river is running brown after heavy rain.
• Hanalei River and Bay — the classic North Shore paddle. Flat water up the river, and in summer the bay itself is gentle enough for boards.
• The Nā Pali Coast — expert-only, summer-only, and genuinely serious. Go with a guide or not at all.

Cycling on the North Shore

Be realistic: Kuhio Highway is narrow, has no shoulder in places, and crosses one-lane bridges. It is not relaxed family cycling. Bikes here are best used for short local trips — the store, the beach, a mile or two of quiet road — rather than long touring. The dedicated coastal path is on the east side at Kapaʻa, and it is excellent.

Safety, briefly and seriously

• Never paddle out of a river mouth into open ocean on the North Shore in winter.
• Check the surf report before any ocean paddle; this coast changes fast.
• Wear the leash. Wear the life jacket where required.
• Brown water means bacteria and current after rain — stay out for a day or two.
